Matthew David James was a dedicated public servant, a proud U.S. Marine, an elite wildland firefighter, and a deeply devoted father. Born on April 16, 1973, in Flagstaff, Arizona, Matt lived a life defined by courage, adventure, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others.

A Dedicated Military and Civil Career

  • U.S. Marine Corps Service: Following his graduation in 1991, Matt enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving proudly as a Recon Ranger in the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, Reconnaissance Company 6 until 1995.

  • Wildland Firefighting Leadership: Transitioning to civil service, Matt built an extraordinary 30-year career with the U.S. Forest Service. He served as the ᴀssistant Superintendent for the elite Black Mountain H๏τsH๏τs and later as the ᴀssistant Fire Management Officer on the Umatilla National Forest until his retirement in 2023.

  • Continued National Impact: Even after official retirement, he continued working on national incident management teams in critical leadership roles such as Operations Section Chief and Branch Director.

A Loving Father and Outdoorsman

Beyond his demanding career, Matt found his greatest fulfillment in being a father to his three sons: Emmett, Lincoln, and Sawyer. He shared his profound love for the outdoors with them through camping, snowboarding, mountain biking, hunting, and fishing, instilling in them core values of perseverance, hard work, and independence.

Raising Awareness and Compᴀssion

Matt pᴀssed away on July 31, 2025, in Walla Walla, Washington, after a courageous battle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In sharing his story, his family hopes to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging open conversations, empathy, and support for anyone fighting silent battles. His legacy of bravery, dedication, and deep love for his family and community will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
